La Cantine dans les écoles

La Cantine dans les écoles (program in schools), how does it work ?

Who are our school caterers?

Thirty three (33) of our members participate to La Cantine dans les écoles’ program. Discover the complete list of our members here.

All of our members aim to promote food safety. They are at the heart of our project.

How do I know if my child’s school is part of the program?

The list of participating schools can be found here → https://commander.lacantinepourtous.org/en/school

What is included in a meal?

All meals contain the daily portion of protein, vegetables and carbs recommended for children. The meal is served with a dessert. Children must bring their own water bottle and cutlery.

What kind of meal is served?

Our members offer a wide variety of meals, from typical Canadian dishes to world cuisine. Hot meals and vegetarian options are available daily. All menus are approved by a nutritionist.

Here are some examples of typical meals served in the schools:

  • Regular meal: Butter chicken, served with madras rice and steamed broccoli. Dessert: Carrot cookies.
  • Regular meal: Shepherd's pie (layers of mashed potatoes, corn and ground beef). Dessert: Blueberry cake.
  • Vegetarian meal: Falafel and broccoli risotto, served with vegetables and edamame and homemade garlic sauce. Dessert: Fresh fruit.

These examples are provided as a guide only and may not be available in all schools serviced.

Is cutlery provided?

In an effort to be sustainable and reduce waste, no utensils are provided with meals. Parents are responsible for providing clean reusable cutlery (fork, knife, spoon or chopsticks) in the children's bags on order days.

As a reminder, as of December 20, 2022, the manufacture and import for sale in Canada of single-use plastics (including cutlery) is prohibited.

Are the containers environmentally friendly?

Sustainability is very important to us, and we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact. We are proud to serve meals from La Cantine dans les écoles in compostable or recyclable containers.

How does it work for food allergies?

Although the list of allergens is given in the details of the meals and our menus do not contain peanuts or nuts, we cannot guarantee the total absence of traces of allergenic foods, whatever they may be.

La Cantine dans les écoles cannot therefore be held responsible if there is a physical reaction or other consequence following the ingestion of a meal.

Do you offer special diet options? (vegetarian, halal, kosher, etc.)

Vegetarian: All of our caterers offer vegetarian options.

Vegan: Some of our caterers offer vegan options. We invite you to check the menu of your local caterer!

Halal: A few of our caterers source halal meat. The vegetarian option can usually accommodate this diet.

Kosher: Currently, our caterers do not offer a kosher option.

Please contact our Customer Service at 1-833-437-0958 or info@lacantinepourtous.org to get more details about the options your local caterer offers.

How do I register?

Registration for La Cantine dans les écoles is free and open throughout the school year for parents of participating schools.

Click here for a simple and visual step-by-step explanation (available in five languages: French, English, Spanish, Swahili and Arabic).

How does the flexible pricing system work?

The flexible price allows parents to pay an amount that fits their budget, confidentially. The meal's value is $6, and La Cantine pour tous covers any shortfall if necessary. This ensures that the social caterer is fairly compensated and can remain operational. Only La Cantine pour tous knows the amounts paid by parents, allowing children to eat healthily, without distinction.

Some parents choose to pay more than $6 per meal, knowing that the excess will help feed other children. We encourage you to do the same if your situation allows. You are free to adjust the price paid per meal from one order to the next, depending on your means.

We explain how it works and where the money goes in this article (only available in French).

What are the forms of payment accepted?

Several payment methods are available on the ordering platform:

  • Payment by credit or debit card with online payment : Simply enter your card information, and you're all set.
  • Payment by Pre-Authorized Debit in Canada: This payment method allows the invoice amount to be directly debited from your checking account. To set up a pre-authorized debit, you must provide the information associated with your bank account and authorize the amount to be withdrawn. Click here for more information about direct debit in Canada.

All payment methods offered by La Cantine pour tous are secure, and only the amounts for orders placed will be debited. If you don't order, you don't pay. If you encounter any difficulties, please contact our customer service team.

Is there a minimum order?

No, there is no minimum number of meals to order. Parents can choose to order as many as they wish, whether it be occasionally or every day the service is available.

How far in advance should I order?

This period varies between 3 and 5 business days depending on your caterer. Visit your account to find out the delivery time for your caterer. The deadline for orders and cancellations is the same.

Is it possible to modify or cancel an order?

You can cancel one or more meals and place a new order. To do so, go to the 'My Orders' section. After selecting the relevant order, choose the date of the meal·s to cancel by accessing the details of your order through the icon on the right, then cancel it·them. You'll also have the option to cancel the entire order.

You must adhere to the deadlines set by the caterers. If it's impossible to cancel your order, it means you've exceeded the deadline.

What should I do if my child is absent?

You can cancel a meal as long as the ordering deadline is respected (see the question Is it possible to modify or cancel an order? above). Once the deadline has passed, unfortunately, you can no longer cancel a meal. If your child is absent on the day of a scheduled order, the school may distribute the meal to other students in need to avoid food waste. Since the meals have already been reheated for service, it is recommended to consume them as soon as possible to ensure food safety.

How to view a placed order?
